Your Fire Department

The Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department was first chartered on September 18, 1973. The Department began when Carolina Caribbean Corporation (the developer of Beech Mountain) gave members of the community two vehicles and a life estate to a 40x40 metal building that had been part of the original Carolina Caribbean maintenance complex.

Our 1st pumper was fabricated by Goforth Inc. of Gastonia N.C., the same company that manufactured the original ski lift equipment. It was a 1969 International 4 wheel drive with a 250 gpm PTO pump and 300 gallon booster tank. The initial gift also included a 1968 Chevrolet tanker truck that was a converted oil tanker. (We replaced this tanker in Fall 2006.)

At elevations to 5,506 feet above sea level, our fire department is unlike others in many ways. We provide fire and Advanced Life Support Emergency Medical Service protection to the town and surrounding area, including the counties of Avery and Watauga. Our response area includes 68 miles of roads and 10 square miles of land.

Over the years, we have added equipment and facilities so that the department has all the equipment that is needed to get the job done. (Click on Stations and Trucks to see our latest equipment)
