John Allan Hoffman, Jr.
September 20, 1948 – June 4, 2026
John Allan Hoffman Jr. passed away leaving a legacy of leadership, service, and
devotion. Born in Lansdale, PA, to John Hayes Hoffman and Jacqueline Haines
Hoffman, he was profoundly shaped by the loss of his firefighter father at age seven.
This inspired a lifetime of protecting others.
After moving to Pompano Beach, FL, John joined the Civil Air Patrol and earned the
Air Force Amelia Earhart Commendation Medal at sixteen. In 1968, he enlisted in the
U.S. Air Force, serving overseas during the Vietnam War maintaining B-52 aircraft.
Following his service, he joined the Pompano Highlands Fire Department, rising to
Battalion Chief and dedicating himself to advancing firefighter safety.
In the 1980s, John relocated to Beech Mountain, NC, where he became a cornerstone
of the community. He was a manager at Fred’s General Mercantile, served on ski patrol,
the Planning Board, the Beech Mountain Fire Department, and was a certified
instructor training current and future firefighters. It was here that he met his wife, Paige,
and embraced his role as a devoted father to Matthew. John was known for his booming
voice, infectious laugh, and generous spirit.
John is survived by his wife, Paige King Hoffman; son, Matthew Wimberley and wife
Sally; and granddaughters, Cappi and Willa Wimberley. He was preceded in death by
his parents and his brother, Barry. His memory remains a blessing to all.
A service will be held by the Beech Mountain Fire Department at Wynn Memorial Park,
510 Beech Mountain Pkwy, Beech Mountain, NC on September 19th at 10:00 am.
Donations in John’s memory can be made to the Beech Mountain Fire Department,
P.O. Box 436, Beech Mountain, NC 28604.
